Three months ago, Jocelyn Davis was faced with the ultimate decision of whether to continue working for someone else or to start her own business.
Armed with today’s economic challenges, a very small savings, and a wedding in two months, Jocelyn started Akemi Fitness Method. Her goal was to capture the feeling of an intimate and quaint fitness studio where guests could come and not feel pressured or intimidated about working out.
Jocelyn got her inspiration from The Lotte Berk Method studio in New York City, under the direction of Ms. Lydia Bach. Jocelyn was the last teacher who trained at the Lotte Berk Method studio before it closed its doors in 2005.
The Lotte Berk Method started in London around the 1950’s and was created by a former dancer and teacher Lotte Berk. Only the elite and celebrity clients like Joan Collins, Barbara Streisand, and Edna O’ Brien would attend Lotte’s classes. This method combines orthopedic and core exercises that promote the growth of muscle tissue in which calories are burned a faster pace.
Over the years, this method has evolved and Jocelyn feels that the Akemi Method carries some of the same disciplines along with a new trend in fitness that combines aerobics, dance, Pilate’s, and yoga.
Some of the benefits from doing The Akemi Method included reduced stress and anxiety, flat abs, a lifted derrière, toned arms and thighs, improved flexibility, stamina and endurance.
Along with the help from her fiancé Ronald Davis, Jocelyn handles all of the accounting, administration, and marketing. Not to mention teaching all of the classes and managing the studio.
Jocelyn’s advice to anyone who is thinking of starting his or her own business? Don't get discouraged with the economic challenges. Start small and then build your way up. Stay positive and network yourself within your community. Talk to local churches, colleges, and small organizations.
The future of Akemi Fitness Method is remaining proactive within the community and beyond interactively, globally, and nationally.
Jocelyn’s classes are challenging, inspiring, motivational, positive and upbeat.
